Here’s the deal on dues.  Ocean Hill Estates is a neighborhood, not a binding HOA (home owners association).  We do not have mandatory fees.  We are, nonetheless, a community, a very nice community of friendly, thoughtful, generous, engaged families.  There is an open committee of people (OHEC) which formed over ten years ago to try to look out for the upkeep of common areas, facilitate communication, and sponsor neighborhood events.  There are expenses associated with those functions which are covered by annual dues.  The dues are voluntary, not a tax.  They are asked for between May 1st and June 30th each year.  The amount collected determines which functions can be supported and at what level.  Thanks to increasing participation the suggested annual dues of $60 per household has remained the same for many years.  Each home is encouraged to contribute their fair share… or more or less… as each feels is appropriate to help defray expenses.  Here is an estimate of the 2018 budget item percentages that money* will go for (in rough order of priority):
30%...mowing and clean up of common grassy areas  
25%...stockade fence repair for common areas
10%...gateway east fencing enhancement
  5%...new plantings for gateway gardens
  5%...mulch for gateway gardens
  1%...signage and communication for neighborhood events
  3%...luminary display materials
  3%...yard sale advertising and promotion 
  3%...halloween party and snacks for kids
15%...annual party (whether end of summer or end of year)

(* The monies are kept in a dedicated local bank account; records are available for inspection upon request.)
